The Mississippi Delta... If you're interested, I can tell you all about how messed up this area is, and how a delta like this wouldn't extend so far without human intervention...

Its all about human induced runnoff and eroison right. The delta smells aweful too, at least from New Orleans. And lets not forget the cuddlely little Nurtia that is destroying the wetland and estuary vegetation.
Pretty much yeah. All the artificial levees and such have prevented the river from switching its course. By now, the river would have switched to the Atchafalaya to the west. Also, all the extraction of water and oil in the Gulf are causing the land to subside, flooding the delta. Since New Orleans is such a big port, they're going to do whatever they can to keep the river going through there, but the delta is doomed.
